Italian Senior Open

This is the final full field event of the 2016 European Senior Tour. Only the Tour Championship in Mauritius is left to play after this week. The field size is limited to 48 players in Mauritius and so a solid performance here will help solidify my position for the Tour Championship.

So now we are playing the Udine Golf Club near Udine, Italy.

The views from the course towards the Italian Alps, which are only 20 minutes away is absolutely beautiful.

The course has recently undertaken an extensive renovation, changing some of the holes both in direction and length. The reshaping of the terrain and the slow regrowth means there are spotty areas with moderate grass growth and muddy, thin lie areas.

Given another full growing season and the course will be really good.

The course and this region have endured some heavy rains over the last while and through the early part of this week. So much so that the Pro Am was cancelled today as the greens are holding too much water on them and some tees are under water.

As a result of all this moisture the course is playing extremely long with no roll.

In my final practice round yesterday I used either my 3-Wood or one of my three Hybrids on 16 of the 18 holes. I cannot reach 4 of the holes in regulation and will require a sharp short game to keep me in the contest.

Weather Forecast During Playing Time:

Friday 8C – 13C Overcast POP 60% Wind 8 – 11 km/h NNE

Saturday 8C -13C Clear to Partly Cloudy POP 0% Wind 5 – 6 km/h E – SSE

Sunday 10C – 14C Partly Cloudy POP 5% Wind 5 km/h E

As a special treat on this trip Tina and I spent a few days in Venice and enjoyed amongst other things a Gondola ride as well as the glass works shops.

When we arrived here at the golf course we were met by Jason Culleton who is a former #1 Assistant Professional of mine when I worked in Toronto.

Jason is now located in Graz, Austria (only 3 hours drive from Udine) and teaching at a couple of different facilities.

We have stayed in touch over the years and it has been wonderful to share time together and talk about our families, old jobs and of course both teaching and playing competitive tour golf.

As always thank you very much for following my tournament play and for writing me with your encouragement!!
